Our Canterbury-Bankstown arborist services
Reports, investigation and construction-stage compliance through one point of contact.
DA arborist reports and AIAs
Prepared for Development Applications where existing, neighbouring or Council trees may be affected by proposed buildings, driveways, excavation, basements, services or other construction works. Reports can assess tree condition, retention value, Tree Protection Zones, Structural Root Zones and the likely impacts of the proposed development.
Health and safety tree assessments
Assessment of trees where there are concerns about declining health, structural defects, decay, branch failure or other arboricultural issues. The assessment documents the condition of the tree and provides recommendations based on the conditions observed at the property.
Tree removal reports
Arboricultural evidence for protected-tree removal matters where Council requires professional assessment of tree health, structural condition or other relevant arboricultural factors.
Tree pruning reports
Pruning assessment and Council permit support where proposed pruning exceeds Council’s exempt limits, plus professional pruning once any necessary approval is in place.
Root investigation and mapping
Root investigation where proposed driveways, excavation, retaining walls, foundations or other works are close to retained trees and additional information about root location may assist design or construction decisions.
Tree protection plans
Protection measures for retained trees before and during construction, applying the relevant tree protection principles of AS 4970-2025 to the individual site.
Project arborist services
Construction-stage inspections, arborist supervision, hold-point inspections and certification where trees are required to remain during development.
Emergency tree assessment
Urgent response for fallen, storm-damaged and immediately dangerous trees, including make-safe work and Council-ready documentation after the event.
Canterbury-Bankstown Council tree requirements
Canterbury-Bankstown Council regulates protected trees through its Tree Management Order. Under Council's current private-tree guidance, trees less than 5 metres in height are generally exempt. Trees over 5 metres may require Council permission for removal or significant pruning unless another exemption applies, including exempt species or qualifying trees located close to the primary dwelling.
All trees on public land are protected under the Tree Management Order regardless of size, species or origin.
Where a proposed development may affect existing trees, Council recommends assessment by an AQF Level 5 Consulting Arborist as part of the design process. Development-related Arboricultural Impact Assessments are generally expected to be prepared in accordance with AS 4970-2025, Protection of trees on development sites. Where removal is approved, Council generally applies a 3:1 replacement planting requirement, subject to the conditions of the determination.
Council officers assess trees from the ground during a site visit. Where an application relies on tree condition, structural defects, root-related damage or evidence not visible from ground level, such as upper-canopy condition or a claimed link to pipe blockages, supporting arboricultural evidence may strengthen the information available to Council.
Council information last verified 3 September 2026. Requirements can change, so confirm with Canterbury-Bankstown Council for property-specific advice.
Development projects may require
- Arboricultural Impact Assessment
- Tree Protection Zone and Structural Root Zone assessment
- Tree Protection Plan
- Root investigation
- Project Arborist supervision or certification
- Assessment of Council or neighbouring trees affected by the works
For standalone tree matters
The first step is to establish whether the tree is protected, exempt, subject to another approval or requires supporting arboricultural evidence. The relevant Council tree controls and exemptions should be checked before work begins.
Canterbury-Bankstown Council wards we service
Development pressure and tree constraints vary considerably across Canterbury-Bankstown. Bankstown has major higher-density redevelopment around its commercial and transport centre. Campsie and Canterbury combine urban renewal with established trees and heritage-controlled areas. Revesby, Panania and Picnic Point extend toward the Georges River and substantial bushland. Roselands, Lakemba and Belmore contain established residential neighbourhoods alongside increasingly intensive development.
Darani / Bankstown Ward
Bankstown, Chullora, Greenacre, Mount Lewis and Punchbowl. Bankstown is one of the LGA’s major redevelopment areas, with higher-density residential and mixed-use development around the CBD and transport interchange. Projects commonly involve established private and street trees alongside larger building footprints, excavation, access and services.
Bura / Bass Hill Ward
Bass Hill, Birrong, Chester Hill, Condell Park, Georges Hall, Lansdowne, Potts Hill, Regents Park, Sefton, Villawood and Yagoona. This ward combines established residential neighbourhoods with employment and industrial land, larger development sites and areas close to the Georges River.
Budjar / Canterbury Ward
Ashbury, Belfield, Campsie, Canterbury, Clemton Park, Earlwood, Hurlstone Park and the Canterbury-Bankstown portion of Croydon Park. Campsie and Canterbury are important urban-renewal areas, while Ashbury, Hurlstone Park and parts of Croydon Park have significant heritage considerations.
Bunya / Revesby Ward
East Hills, Milperra, Padstow, Padstow Heights, Panania, Picnic Point, Revesby and Revesby Heights. The ward contains established residential neighbourhoods, larger allotments and substantial tree canopy, particularly toward the Georges River and adjoining bushland.
Bunmarra / Roselands Ward
Belmore, Beverly Hills, Kingsgrove, Lakemba, Narwee, Punchbowl, Riverwood, Roselands and Wiley Park. This ward combines established residential neighbourhoods with major commercial centres and transport corridors.

Frequently asked questions
If your question is not here, send us the details and we will tell you what applies.
Which Canterbury-Bankstown ward is my property in?
If you are unsure which ward applies, send us the property address and we can identify the relevant ward before determining the appropriate arborist service. Some suburbs cross ward or Council boundaries, so the exact property location can matter. Punchbowl, for example, is divided between the Darani / Bankstown and Bunmarra / Roselands wards, while several suburbs near the LGA boundary extend into neighbouring councils.
Do I need an Arborist Report for a Development Application?
Where a proposed building, driveway, excavation, basement, retaining wall, service trench or other construction may affect existing trees, Council may require arboricultural assessment as part of the development documentation. The appropriate report can range from a Development Arborist Report to a full Arboricultural Impact Assessment depending on the project and the trees affected.
Do I need an Arborist Report to remove a tree?
That depends on the tree, the property, the reason for removal and the Council approval pathway. Where arboricultural evidence is required, an AQF Level 5 Arborist Report can document matters such as tree health, structural condition, defects and other relevant arboricultural considerations.
Does Canterbury-Bankstown Council require an AQF Level 5 arborist?
Council recommends AQF Level 5 assessment as part of the design process for developments affecting trees, and states that Arboricultural Impact Assessments submitted with a Development Application or requested by Council should be prepared by an appropriately qualified Consulting Arborist with a minimum AQF Level 5 qualification. That requirement applies to the person preparing the report, not to every tree matter.
What does an Arboricultural Impact Assessment assess?
Tree species and dimensions, health and structural condition, retention value, Tree Protection Zones, Structural Root Zones, proposed development encroachment, excavation and construction impacts, and recommendations for retention, protection or removal.
Do you work with architects, builders and developers?
Yes. We prepare arboricultural documentation from the early design and Development Application stages through to Tree Protection Plans, construction monitoring and Project Arborist certification.
Can you investigate tree roots before construction?
Yes. Root Investigation and Mapping can be used where the location of significant roots needs to be better understood before excavation, driveway construction, retaining-wall works or final design decisions.
